Eating too much sugar can contribute to people getting diabetes. Young people are especially at risk these days, what with junk food, drinks and candy that are packed with too much sugar.

Well, KFC wants to do something about it. The fast food company will donate $1 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation if you buy one particular item. What is that item? -- a "Mega Jug" of Pepsi.

A Mega Jug contains 64 ounces of soda, with more than 750 calories and 200 grams of sugar. It's meant to be split with others, but still, donating money to fighting diabetes by buying a drink that could cause diabetes? Genius marketers!

The U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee will vote on the Fiscal Year 2012 Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee bill tomorrow (May 13, 2011), which contains funding for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP).  The bill contains $120 million, substantially less than the $200  million it recieved in 2009 and 2010. It is critical that funding for EFSP be restored.

Help restore the funding by contacting your representatives.  Members of this subcommittee MUST recieve telephone calls from their constituents regarding funding for EFSP today.

To advocate for EFSP funding:

• Call the main number of the U.S. Capitol at 202-225-3121;

• Ask for your Member’s office;

• When you are connected, inform the receptionist that you are a constituent and ask for the appropriations legislative assistant;

• When you are connected, tell her who you are and explain you are calling on behalf of the United Way (or your agency) in the Representative’s district;

• Tell her that the Emergency Food and Shelter Program provides critical food and housing support in their district;

• Explain that the $120 million contained in the Homeland Security bill would result in about a 40% reduction in funding to the Representative’s district compared to 2009 and 2010. 

• Be sure to thank the staffer and the Member for their work on behalf of the people of their district.

• Access EFSP awards in your state by county in 2010.
